Nepal’s 7.8 earthquake and the subsequent aftershocks affected thousands. This instant devastation creates problems well beyond the actual event. Among those surrounded by the avalanche triggered on Everest were two climbers in the Active Junky family.
One, Jim Walkley, was making another attempt with a seasoned group from Colorado. Another, Ryan Waters, was leading a group from Mountain Professionals. Both reported good news about their parties, including being well stocked with supplies.
After the avalanche, their attention immediately turned to rendering assistance. Their evacuation is likely weeks out as trauma cases receive the attention they warrant. Even clearing basecamp means a prolonged queue in Katmandu as humanitarian flights take precedence.
Knowing both of these men, they will return with deep reflections on what they witnessed along with their instant immersion in rendering aid. While the Active Junky team headquartered in Denver can only image this scenario, at least three thoughts come immediately to mind.
Interdependence enables us to reach farther, dream bigger and survive in spite of ourselves. When circumstances loom larger than our strength and skills, trusted companions are what we need; they need us in return.
The grandeur of nature inspires humility and appreciation for that which dwarfs us. Knowing we travel among great and changing forces is not in and of itself a reason to remain home, but rather one that we must accept in order to stay balanced.
Exercising our passions and getting past ourselves are not mutually exclusive. Where we go and how we travel can mean more than adrenaline and campfire stories. Living a life that matters means standing with companies, organizations and individuals with both solid skills and estimable core beliefs.
One response is to join Jim and others in providing resources at www.himalayan-foundation.org. Another is to turn your eyes to mountains, forests, rivers, deserts or oceans with awe and humility.
The ones you value, trust and love might appreciate a text or email as well.
Even today.
