Description

Field Notes: Optic Nerve has developed a new series of performance sunglasses that will interest Active Junky gear crushers. Built around a new quick-release lens design, the Flip Off series is an innovation that reduces lens handling on interchangeables and, according to the Colorado-based brand, promises secure lens placement – two of the biggest problems for the style of shades that the company readily admits and aimed to combat.

Optic Nerve says their sunglasses are built for "urban athletes," who transition from intense activity to relaxing at the local après hot spot in a trailhead-to-tavern philosophy, those in areas where conditions can change quickly, or whose all-day pursuits go from low light to bright mid-day light, and back to low light. The ability to change lenses means you only need one frame.

The new Flip Off series was introduced at the 2016 Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in August, and will be available in a new 2017 collection. One model from the series that caught Active Junky’s eye was the Nightcrawler, a pair of interchangeable sunglasses all about versatility, as its hot selling point is the simple and quick change-out lens system.

The Nightcrawler features high-impact polycarbonate lenses that are 100 percent UV ABC protective, no matter the tint you choose: go with Smoke for sunny, bright conditions, Copper for overcast or low-light, or Clear for darker conditions when your eyes need all available light to see well. One important point to note is that Optic Nerve interchangeable lenses are not polarized.

Nightcrawler touts a minimized temple length to fit varying face shapes and, importantly, to fit better under hats and helmets. Testers also benefited from venting and washable anti-fog coating, an adjustable alloy wire bridge with reduced span for better peripheral view, hydrophilic rubber noses, and a TR90 Grilamid nylon frame offering durability while remaining comfortable.

Pros: Affordable and versatile, building off and improving existing interchangeable sunglasses lens technology

Cons: Not the Italian quality of some of the other models.

Tester Comments: “Optic Nerve makes some great, affordable stuff, just like their ski goggles, and the Nightcrawler is no exception.”

Key Attribute: Versatility

Best For: Quickly changing conditions without needing multiple pairs of sunglasses.
