Cure Your Hangover, Save Your Ski Day

Apres Ski

For many young people (and old for that matter) who make skiing and riding a part of their lifestyle there are two things that are very important: snow and partying. Although nothing can tantalize the senses and stir excitement like 6 inches of fresh pow, the sound of popping open a cold one is mystical, even sacred. Plus, drinking ski shots is a classic skiing tradition nearly as old as snowflake sweaters.

Yet there comes a time after every beer can has been crushed and every Jager bottle drained when the sun starts to glow over the tops of the mountains. That's the time when the trouble ensues. Hangovers leave millions of snow seekers crippled, sunglass-clad and begging for mercy. To save your day on the slopes Active Junky has put together some tips to avoid that rung-out sponge feeling come morning.

Coconut WaterCoconut Water: It's a miracle beverage for several reasons. First of all, the subtle smooth taste of the water itself is delicious and soothing. Second, it contains electrolytes that are vital to your transformation from light-sensitive zombie into regular human being ready to ski. Third, it replaces potassium, a mineral sapped by alcohol.

Alka-Seltzer Morning Relief: The gist of Bayer's new hangover cure is that it packs strong pain relief with caffeine and their traditional effervescent (bubbles) to help calm your stomach, un-muddle your head and get you moving. Since you drop the tablets in good old water it also hydrates you - important for the hang-over at elevation.

Take A Shower: We've never heard of this but Hangovercure.org says that taking a shower can remove excess alcohol that you have sweated out from your skin. Feeling clean is also one of the first steps to going back to the world of normal.

Sports Drinks: This is an oldie but goodie: Sports drinks contain electrolytes, and since all that Jager you drank last night zapped your electrolytes, this is a sure-fire way to start feeling better immediately. Bonus? It will also help you perform better on the mountain.

"Just Drink Sake:" One of the head honchos over at AJ seems to think that Sake doesn't give you a devastating hangover. We're a little dubious, but the idea is that Sake has fewer congeners (toxic chemicals formed during fermentation) than other beverages since the rice grain is very milled down and many of the proteins and fatty acids that cause congeners are eliminated.

CoffeeExercise: Men's Health says that exercise after a night of heavy drinking can help you sweat out toxins and release endorphins to bust those "I feel like road kill" blues. Since you are planning on going out skiing anyway (Skiing Rule 1: Never let a hangover stop you from hitting the slopes) this could be a perfect solution.

Coffee: There is nothing like a swift kick in the pants by a morning cup of joe. Although you have to drink water as well since it's dehydrating, it can help give you a little spunk after staying up all night dancing with your new friend, "fancy hair."

Water: Water is the best hung-over skier saver there is. Not only does it re-hydrate you (since drinking and being at elevation are both very dehydrating) it also helps you flush out some of the toxins from those endless vodka Red Bulls. Believe me, you are going to want to chug water both before you go to bed and in the morning. It's also really smart to carry a Camelbak with you when you ski.
