Backcountry’s inventory is full of the best outdoor products from top brands, and the folks who work for the Utah-based site rip; they know their gear. As such, they aren’t going to put their stamp of approval on an exclusive line that won’t keep pace with the competition and meet the standards of their employees.

That said, we were stoked when Backcountry.com announced the launch of Basin and Range. Check out some of our cold weather favorites. And don’t forget to sign up for Active Junky for exclusive deals and cashback on your gear purchases.
Basin and Range Wasatch 800 Fill Down Jacket
Whether breaking the bootpack in the backcountry or just cruising around town, the Basin and Range Wasatch 800 Fill Down Jacket proved its worth and impressed our Active Junky testers with its warmth-to-weight ratio, relaxed fit for additional layers and compactability. One important thing of note, testers noticed the down quickly leaking after only a couple of months of wear. Hopefully the leak lessens as the down jacket wears in. But besides the noted leaky down, the jacket is as at home in the city as it is lightweight enough for long tours and warm enough to be your primary insulator on frigid days in the backcountry.
Tester Quote: “The hood is comfortable and spacious, the fit is slim but not overly so; this piece excels on backcountry tours.”
Best For: All-around winter wear, from the city to the backcountry
Basin and Range Summit Park Polartec Fleece Hoody - Men's
The best hoodies must meet a few basic requirements: they should be comfortable, keep you warm and … well that’s about it. While looking good has little bearing on function, Basin and Range’s Summit Park Polartec Fleece Hoody covers ascetics as well with its stylish slim fit and asymmetrical diagonal chest pattern. Text Polartec made from 100% polyester fleece comprises the exterior while inner fabric feels soft and comfy on bare skin, like a good hoody should.
Tester Quote: “Climbing 5.11s or going out to happy hour, this hoody gets the job done.”
Best For: 3-season wear, staying comfy in casual settings
Basin and Range Empire 3L Pants Starting at: $124.78
Simple style plus burly construction is a combination that takes the Empire 3L Pants from blue bird days in the park to flurried tree runs and dawn patrol backcountry excursions. When choosing your size, Active Junky testers found they ran a bit large. However, once you dial in your fit, the 3-layer fabric with inner thigh zips make for a breathable pair of pants. Boot gaiters with reinforced cuffs were appreciated, whether trekking steep terrain with the aid of crampons or wandering around slushy streets.
Tester Quote: “Last pair you’ll ever need. The heels won’t rip and the vents are a blessing.”
Best For: All-around skiing and riding
