Riding the Rays: Solar-Powered Airplane Circumnavigates Globe

On July 25th, 2016, airplane Solar Impulse 2 landed in Abu Dhabi, 16 months after leaving the same city to complete a first: a fuel-less, solar-powered flight around the world. Pilots Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg set out over a decade ago to prove that clean, renewable energy is a viable option for domestic and intercontinental travel.  And this $177 million accomplishment validates their vision, flying more than 22,000 miles, both day and night, powered solely by sunlight. While we’re years away from booking solar-fueled flights, Active Junky sees the potential. Learn more about this historic journey and the pilots here.
