Description

Field Notes: While not a new member of the Goal Zero line-up, this model continues to astound users. And is one of the most requested “can I borrow it?” items in the testers’ gear locker. For less than $70, the lantern showcases both a wide range of functions as well as three ways to put power back into the system. At a basic level, the Lighthouse 250 Lantern offers between 2.5 and 48 hours of runtime, peaking at (no surprise) 250 lumens.

The two-side design, coined “DuaLite Directional” by Goal Zero, sends reliable rays in either a full or half-arc. Unlike most camping lanterns, the LEDs are cloistered within an inner diffusion chamber, then surrounded by upper and lower circular reflectors. The entire lighting system is contained in a wider, clear lens mounted securely on the stable battery compartment. Choices in coverage and brightness are worthwhile, compounded by three (or more) ways of displaying the light.

While testers valued the dual spider-like leg loops (to extend the camping light’s useful range), simply placing the Goal Zero lantern on a flat surface provided maximum stability in windier conditions. Up top, the hanging loop is useful while being somewhat harder to carry by bigger hands (due to limited clearance between the wire and the lantern’s top). Rotary switching puts most functions at the ready, flanked by a triangle flasher switch for red pulsing lights up top.

Active Junky’s belief in the system goes even further as charging happens through an integrated USB cable along with a fold-out crank generator for supplemental replenishment; each minute of cranking yield 10 minutes of light. Using a compatible solar panel (such at the Nomad 7) offers a third input, while the (uncovered) USB front port means instant access to the 4400 mAh sequestered in the base. While water resistant, the Lighthouse 250 is designed for moderate weather conditions along with anytime inside use. At 498g, this model is more basecamp than backcountry as the company’s 226.8g Lighthouse Mini delivers up to 210 lumens without a crank back-up system.

Tester Comments: “This one has become a camping essential. Goal Zero’s attention to detail in building the product is evident. Light levels and direction are managed easily, and we used the front USB port to top off phones without a noticeable loss in stored power levels.”
