Description

Field Notes: Hobie is no stranger to the world’s waters with an inflatable SUP that stays true with superior tracking in spite of crosswinds. The standup paddleboard’s decking is among the most comfortable non-slip top covers testers have paddled. Notably, the stability of the 32”-wide Tour is above average when paddled mid-board. For greater agility, step back from center only a few inches to allow the nose greater freedom to move left and right. Stability comes at a price as the boat’s drag coefficient is somewhat high, making for more exertion than warranted for the speed attained (estimated in the 7%-10% range). An extended length at 12’6” accounts for much of a difference between Hobie Tour and other boards paddled by Active Junky testers. If dumped, getting back on the board is carefree with paddler confidence growing with every stroke. Skeg attachment is foolproof, and the tension clip appears durable enough to handle moderate abuse without breaking. The bag that comes with the travel system is well conceived, obvious to pack properly and moderately comfortable to carry. Truly, this extension of the Hobie legacy complements the other watercraft in their line-up, one that includes pedal-powered kayaks, sailboats and standup paddleboards. Quality construction is a given, and individual models fit both single and tandem journeys.

Pros: Effortless inflation, reliable tracking particularly in aggressive winds, good choice of inflatable SUP for fine tuning your paddling skills and building specific muscle strength needed for improved balance and longer paddling trips

Cons: Included three-piece paddle too short for taller paddlers (over 6’2”) so power and efficiency reduced, paddleboard’s drag a bit on the high side

Tester Comments: “The drop stitch construction looks totally solid, takes higher pressures, and there was no trampoline effect even during aggressive paddling. Front and rear bungees could be thicker diameter to handle top-deck loads with greater competence and a reduced profile to the wind. The pump included is average at best, with single-direction inflow and a moderate volume. Fortunately, Hobie is a ‘fast inflator’ even with a marginal pump.”

Key Attribute: Durability

Best For: Extended day touring, overnight trips with lighter loads
