Description

Field Notes: Innova’s been putting inflatables in tough conditions, including serious whitewater, for a long time. With this tubeless recreational offering, easy inflation in less than 10 minutes includes sliding in the two metal deck forms. Here, inflation ports are easy to access on the floor and two gunwales – and don’t get in the way or catch clothing while paddling. The super-stable platform means entering and exiting the kayak without assistance or even using a paddle for balance. At about 25 lbs, Swing is convenient to maneuver, to carry, launch and land. Extremely well-balanced to carry even over rough ground or through moderate brush, its low draft allows paddling into shallow waters other need to avoid. Even so, cockpit volume is generous to avoid the hemmed-in feeling associated with hardshell boats. Rolling up the 265 lb-capacity Swing 1 for transport was smooth as the Nitrylon hull material is plyable – the single nylon strap included secures the boat in a rolled position. Simple graphics avoid looking too recreational as Swing carries the day in up to Class II rapids.

Pros: No PVC makes for a greener planet as the paddler enters the blue, lower profile defied crosswinds without squeezing the paddler’s leg or feeling unstable

Cons: Tracking fin provides adequate tracking but, for full-haul paddling, another inch of depth would be ideal

Tester Comments: “No worries on durability and three inflation chambers provide some in-water assurance should a leak develop in one: A well-conceived repair kit is included with Swing 1. Highly recommend a cockpit cover if intense weather, spray or sun are anticipated. The Wider cockpit provides a quick exit if there’s a need to get out of the boat even out on the water. Paddling efficiency was far better than expected, but it’s important to keep hands wide on the paddle to avoid hitting the tube-reinforced cockpit rim.”

Key Attribute: Adaptability

Best For: Being the inflatable kayak everyone can enjoy on flat water plus capability to take some downriver turbulence as well as moderate coastal conditions – with a spray skirt: Innova’s option is extremely affordable at $50 and works both for Swing 1 and Swing 2 (tandem) models
