Description

Field Notes: The outer shell is the biggest differentiator here, claiming dent resistance that Active Junky verified by striking with a sand-filled hammer from heights of 18” and 24”: only at 24” with a hard swing did the outer shell permanently (but slightly) dent (dimple actually).

Interior foam handles less powerful impact without showing deterioration. Padding – including parallel bands above the head – helps maintain the floating sensation, with Polygiene treatment that uses silver salt to reduce odor accumulation. Ventilation features dual, parallel rows of five, non-adjustable vents left and right of center. Flow-through is good and the bike helmet should work in most non-extreme environments without considering a cover – or simply covering it with a hoody or jacket hood.

Crane’s headband harness is professional-grade, requiring some level of skill and dexterity to properly adjust – but stayed in place even when the helmet was torqued. Inside, the minimal cage didn’t snag hard, hat or hood. Interior mounted strap hangers make for a clean look and comes off the head quickly without catching. POC’s FIDLOCK buckle is nearly magical once the rider has learned the motion; securing and releasing the magnetic-guided system can be done one-handed even with lighter gloves. Active Junky would like to see a heavy-duty strap keeper as the rubber band-like loop is on the bubble for durability.

Visibility leads the way in all directions including critical peripheral site lines. Pure POC aesthetics impart a European, performance flair without being self-indulgent. The biking helmet is, quite simply, beautiful and maintains a gender-inclusive profile and colorways, and is absolutely ready to roll with even large-lensed sunglasses. Three size ranges handle heads up to those with larger diameters. Pricing is high for the category but reflects a higher level of comfort, design aesthetic and potential longevity from the outer shell to interior suspension system. Double-certified to US CPSC and CE-EN 1078 standards, POC helmets never wander off the safety path.

Tester Comments: “Sublime. Beautiful. Thoughtful in all details. Nothing extra or missing. Wouldn’t be surprised to find it in the Museum of Modern Art.”
