Description

Field Notes: This is the first time testers tried the brand. From the initial launch, the dual slip-in side battens turned a respectable SUP board into a fast-mover. Note: Do as you’re told and slide them into position early in the process as the fit’s a tight one even at under 2 PSI. Easy inflation delivered consistent pressure across the entire board as the $1,400 Sport morphed quickly into a solid, stiff, stable board where plunging deep and pushing higher cadences had no notable effect on the board. Except to go much faster than most of the boards under test with less effort. The Sport’s shape takes on wind and waves reliably while the board’s shape further adds to aggressive “reach and dig” paddling form. Casual paddling was easy as well but this 4.7” thick board begs to go faster. Board decking is fairly thin and less shock-absorbing and comfortable than many paddleboards tested but not a major concern as Sport’s fast profile counters this minor concern. Once seated, the fin is stabile while remaining flexible enough to take some side impact along with be dragged on sand and shore. Sport is among the fastest-rolling models AJ’s tested, with a compact form held in place by a single strap. The optional Red Paddle leash seems significantly overbuilt for the expected application, is bulkier and harder to secure – the long nylon webbing strap that tethers to the retractable coil is a bother. Graphic are less obtrusive than many of the other inflatable SUPs but would benefit from a subtler approach than giant lettering that is inconsistent with the board’s high-performance, get-it-done capabilities.

Pros: Leash attachment is simple, handle position makes for well-balanced carrying, valve construction moderately durable

Cons: Loaner pump leaked through the valve so getting to proper pressure was a challenge, moderate-sized skeg has the problematic bolt and square nut attachment system, prone to being lost in the sand while requiring too much manipulation to properly seat with wet hands

Tester Comments: “Aspiring paddlers will struggle a little bit to get situated on the MSL-fusion model but will cruise once adapted to the more streamlined, fast-moving board. We tested the (optional) carbon composite paddle with good success thanks to quick length adjustment, relaxed balance and reasonable blade area and an easy-feathering shape. Sport’s bungee system could benefit from a six-point attachment configuration rather than the four-point that’s of only nominal value for a jacket, water bottle or flatter dry sack. The Sport package does not include a paddle, but they’ve got a full range of worthwhile fiberglass, carbon and alloy options. And the travel pack is expected to handle years of sorties.”
