Salomon S-Lab Advanced Skin Hydro 12 Set

We only take hydration packs with us on especially long and/or hot runs, so the two things that we ask of our packs are that they stay comfortable over time and distance, and that they hold enough water and gear to keep us safe and hydrated on the trail. Salomon’s S Lab pack meets both of these requirements. The fit could make a glove jealous  – wide straps, anatomical design, and highly elastic sternum straps offer dynamic comfort. We took the pack out for dozens of 10-15 mile trail runs over the last few months, and not one of those miles was uncomfortable, thanks to the features mentioned above, as well as the Sensifit material on the insides of the straps. “You could even rock that thing without a shirt on,” one tester said. “No chafe at all with that pack.”

The storage was huge with this bad boy, too – in addition to the reservoir in the back, there are two pockets on the straps that fit the included Hydroflask soft water bottles, four smaller pockets on the straps that can hold keys, energy food, and other smaller items, and two large zippered pockets underneath the straps to store smartphones, digital cameras, a knife, etc. And here’s the kicker: all of these pockets are easily accessible without taking the pack off. For extra layers, there’s a stretch pocket in the back, and loops that can hold a set of trekking poles. “You’re only limited to how much weight you want to carry on any given run,” our tester said. “You can be ready for pretty much anything.” He wasn’t kidding: after some recent mountain lion sightings in the area, our Northern California tester used the trekking pole straps to carry a machete during an evening run. “It stayed put the whole time,” he said. “But I could whip it out, ninja turtle style, if I needed it.”
