At first glance, the plush suede makes these shoes look soft. And while they do feel like petting a newborn kitten, we mean “soft” as in lacking a burly or tough quality. Wrong. We were thrilled to note that upon stepping into a snow melt stream, the water beaded up and ran right off. Even after trudging around a bit the sealed seems kept water at bay and these waterproof boots shook off and appeared good as new. Suede often has a reputation as being fussy, but The North Face women’s boots manage to capture all the style benefits of suede while being tough enough to take abuse from both terrain and weather.

Field Notes: The Bridgeton women’s leather boots shined in all the tests we threw at them; comfort over the miles, water resistant in rain and slush, waterproof while submerged up to the ankle, and traction over varied surfaces. They are also insulated, so they maintained solid warmth in colder conditions. Overall, these boots performed strongly in all our tests. Our testers put them through hikes that crisscrossed slippery creeks and slick mud, and afterwards wore them to the ballet.

I took them out on a creekside hike, and went off-trail to test my luck on slippery stream side rocks. I was thrilled at how sure-footed I felt, and how well the water beaded up and rolled right off the suede."
