Triple 8 Gotham

Field Notes: With a shape and size strongly connected with urban sensibilities, the feeling is more of having the bike helmet suspended above the head rather than attached to it. Headband size adjustment offers a reassuring “clicking” sound and the rubberized, triangle-shaped knob (dial is reflective) is well-suited for secure tensioning with gloved or wet hands. Triple 8’s Conehead EPS liner technology makes for less weight while aiding energy dissipation on impact. As with other Triple 8 helmets tested by Active Junky, the sculpted EPS liner helps airflow in a category not known for maximum efficiency. 

Foam thickness is ready to go full-on (though neither Triple 8 or Active Junky are here to promote dangerous riding even with this capable cycling helmet). Inside the shape is better at maintaining un-matted hair during commuting than the more aero, road cycling helmets tested. As with others in the category, ventilation is designed for less all-out efforts while using the Triple 8 icon cut-outs on top to cut heat build up. Vents are non-adjustable, standard protocol for this helmet category. 

Protection is beyond question with an ABS Outer shell designed to take multiple smaller impacts and slides in addition to a single big-time hit without needing replacement. The chin strap system includes the Triple 8 pivot to improve comfort and adjust for riding position to prevent neck pressure. Straps are wide enough to provide security without impeding airflow or affecting visibility. Adjustment-wise, the strap system is standard as is the clipped chin closure. 

To the delight of Active Junky testers, the matte finish hides fingerprints and reduces glare to improve visibility by pedestrians, cyclists and motorists even in the black colorway. With a shape that says ready to ride, Triple 8 Gotham isn’t attention-seeking nor does it carry extraneous detailing or parts to catch or break. No over-wrought branding, either. Three size ranges accommodate nearly all head protection needs as do seven or more colorways. All helmets include two sets of interchangeable pads to tune the helmet’s fit and a more-expensive MIPS version is available. Gotham is dual-certified with ASTM Skate and U.S. CPSC Bike safety standards.

Tester Comments: “Get over the helmet’s volume (which is required because of the internal liner) and start having fun – I did. While not for everyone, Gotham is a classic design that Triple 8’s fine-tuned for even more protection and versatility. The name is right on.”
