Weston says the Japow was made for floating endless powder. Well, our testers agree, but also say it has much more to offer. “This is first and foremost a pow board, but it’s a great carver as well,” said one tester from Jackson Hole. Even with such a wide profile it’s quick to initiate turns and transitions easily from one edge to the next. Once on edge, it holds steadfast until redirected. Short swallowtails don’t usually perform well on hardpack or steep terrain, but the Japow isn’t your average swallowtail. Mellow camber runs between the inserts and locks into hard snow, even on the steepest slopes, and the setback stance and large, rockered nose surf like a dream. The nose is soft so it chatters at high speeds on a flat base, but simply setting an edge smoothens the ride. Even in choppy snow, inlaid carbon fiber stringers help dampen bumps that would normally distract riders. If you seek powder lines and anticipate mediocre conditions along the way, then…Bam! Kaboom! Japow!
