A current ebbing by the shoreline, across smooth stones and over submerged tree trunks. In the dappled light, you see movement. A trick played by rippling light? Or, yes, there it is, a trout, hovering inches above the riverbed, fins sculling against the gentle flow. You scan the river, flick your rod and watch the fly drop inches from your target. The beautiful thing? What happens next doesn’t matter.
