Hiking Snacks: Banana Nutter Butter Sandwich

This is revolutionary. Minds will be blown. Culinary compasses will spin wildly, if only to recalibrate. Energy bars will be relegated to the cobwebbed section of the pantry. On a recent hike, struck by fleeting gastronomic brilliance, as though by a lightning bolt sourced from the sweet and savory soul of Mario Batali himself, Active Junky testers sandwiched fresh banana slices between Nutter Butter cookies. The result was the hiking snack of hiking snacks: the Nutter Butter Banana Sandwich.

Ingredients:

Note: this ingredient list is complicated, arduous and not at all for inexperienced hikers.

  • 1 Banana
  • 8 Nutter Butter cookies*

*Preferably the circular variety. Oblong cookies require advanced banana management skills.

Directions:

  1. Remove Nutter Butters from package
  2. Tenderly (keyword) twist the two sides of the Nutter Butter apart, taking care to maintain the pristine surface of peanut butter ambrosia
  3. Place the Nutter Butters on a secure, level surface (on a log, upturned backpack, etc. Maintain safe distance from bears, squirrels and friends/enemies who did not pack Nutter Butters)
  4. Peel banana and nibble tips to square both ends, as a rounded shape isn’t conducive to sandwich-making
  5. Using a pocketknife, slice the banana into 3/8-inch – 4/9-inch sections
  6. Place banana slices on the Nutter Butter cookies (Nutter Butter Banana Sandwiches are best when the peanut butter is on the bottom half of the sandwich)
  7. Crown your glorious creation with the remaining half of the cookie
  8. Press together gently to ensure adhesion. This is the “Panini” step
  9. Savor by a babbling stream
  10. Hike again; refreshed and energized
