Gear That Got It Done: Sun Valley Favorites

Idaho’s striking Sawtooths were the backdrop for sun-spiked runs in early January.  Great gear did more than come along for the ride; it made being there all the sweeter.  Take a look and drop in wearing the best and beautiful.

Dakine Mansfield Jacket: The Total Package

  Dakine Mansfield Jacket

This one’s about a total approach to the mountain.  PrimaLoft Sport insulation is cloaked by two-layer, 10K/10K fabric that resisted abrasion from corn snow and trees branches.  As the day warmed and when climbing was needed, mesh-backed pit zips shed heat building up inside the fully equipped Mansfield (named after a mountain outside of Stowe, Vermont). Taped seams along with a bomber C8 DWR coating stand tall when conditions get serious – and novices flee the mountain.   Unlike park-inspired models, this one strolls into town with classic lines and a beguiling plaid lining.  Dakine knows how to get up and down your favorite runs; Mansfield is proof-positive that style doesn’t have to be left behind when dropping in off Sun Valley’s Bald Mountain.

Key Attribute: Performance

Best For: Taking it all in, from steeps to bumps to plummeting mercury

Columbia Millenium Blur Pant: Spot-On Design

Columbia Millennium Blur Pant Starting at: $188.00

News flash (again) from Active Junky; Omni-Heat thermal reflective dots really work.  We’ve verified their efficacy in midlayers, baselayers and winter boots.  Millenium sports next-gen, fully seam-sealed stretch fabric with articulated knees; testers hiked, skied, walked and chilled out in these versatile insulated pants.  Those leery of buying Columbia when superior performance is the game are encouraged to step up and step into this triple-stitched edge guard model.  Cold weather is vanquished; waist and vent adjustability keep the vertical coming.  Call it spot-on, mountain enthusiasts.

Key Attribute: Durability

Best For: Cold weather pursuits, comfort at altitude logging thousands of vertical feet

Osprey Variant 37 Pack:  Take The High Ground

Osprey Variant 37 Pack Starting at: $171.86

Active Junky likes being prepared for even greater challenges around every turn.  Our Sun Valley film crew grabbed the Variant for top-loading security and multi-point attachment flexibility.  More alpine than pure big mountain, Variant allowed wearers to keep pace with athletes from pre-dawn until late afternoon, glades to moguls.  For men and women pursuing higher elevations, A-frame ski carry and a three-point haul system mean confidence on summit ridges and in couloirs.  Tour it, even with heavier loads, courtesy of an EVA foam expedition belt.  When shooting got hectic and the top flap was not secured, Osprey refused to cough up its contents. If you’re looking for a pack to carry across the seasons and around the world (and even employ for fast-packing sprints), Variant 37 carries the day.

Key Attribute: Fit

Best For: Ski mountaineering, climbing and on-mountain photo pursuits.
